WEEK 1 | Fabric and cutting
This week it's al about color palettes, your fabric pulls and start cutting. Here you'll find lots of mock-ups to give you inspiration in your fabric pull. Next week, we will be starting sewing our square-in-a-square center blocks.
Playing With Background Choices
Bellow are two mock-ups that use the exact same Andover Fabrics Century Solids: Gunmetal, Snow, Spring, Pear and Cloud.
Fabrics A and C switch color from mockup A (left) to mockup B (right), and fabrics B-D-E are fixed in exactly the same position. By changing these two background colors of the Starlight and Astros blocks of the quilt (Fabric A and C), they look completely different, right?
CONTRATST IS THE KEY: make sure to create contrast between Fabric A-E and Fabric B-C-D.
Let's see a two-color Interlaced Stars quilt as an example. I'm using Andover Century Solids, Black and Snow because who could resist a black and white star quilt, right? Aren't they gorgeous?
Dark background + white stars mock-up (left) Black (Fabric A-E) and Snow (Fabric B-C-D).
Light background + black stars mock-up (right) Snow (Fabric A-E) and Black (Fabric B-C-D).
In the example below, I changed Fabric D to a dark purple color. The lack of contrast between fabric D - stars and Fabric A - background means they don't bring out the stars enough to make it a good choice.
SOLUTION: I need to choose a lighter purple color for the stars and get more contrast between Fabric D and A. The result is absolutely beautiful!
And here's an example using the lighter background quilt. Left mock-up shows a lighter yellow as Fabric D - stars and there is not enough contrast between Fabric D and Fabric A - background. So I decided to change it to a really pretty and bright orange color, Carrot Centry Solids and it looks gorgeous.
Finally here two different images to see how contrast is working with different fabrics. The mockup on the left shows all dark colors: Fabric A (dark purple), Fabric B (dark gold centers), Fabric C (dark blue background) and Fabric D (dark blue stars).
SOLUTION: by changing Fabric B and C to light blues and Fabric D - stars to light lilac, the end result is spectacular. Dpn't you love it?
